Semi Precious Weapons

Semi Precious WeaponsHow can you say no to a band that usually comes with a disclaimer and has a music video description that reads "...a glimpse into the filthy and glamorous world of a band set to distort everything you think you know about rock 'n roll." Semi Precious Weapons holds nothing back, making them a perfect fit on Lady Gaga's Monster Ball Tour. Led by the memorable vocalist Justin Tranter, these glam rockers have escaped the underground club scene and are being very vocal on their way to promote free love and carefree living/partying.  We sat down with the band to get, in their words, what they are all about because what I can write doesn't do justice to how unique this group really is - most surprising is that they actually graduated from Berklee College of Music so they really know what they're doing. So keep an eye out for that segment coming soon.

For now, to get a sense of their style and sound, here's the video that Semi Precious Weapons recently premiered for their self-titled single. Parents, protect your kids, because SPW is here...

Miami Does Super Bowl Right

Miami Does Super Bowl Right

What better place to capture the energy of Super Bowl weekend than Miami, right? That's a trip I just couldn't pass up. I decided to trade coasts for the weekend, bring the YH team and cover the excitement.  Country music sweetheart and vitaminwater super fan Carrie Underwood welcomed us into her preparation process for singing the National Anthem before the game. We got to hang with her in her hotel room while she did her makeup and picked out her wardrobe. Then we rode along with her to the stadium for rehearsal and headed out with her to an event at night where she was able to get her mind off the big day.  Young Hollywood made quite the entourage for Carrie, and I think the clip turned out real well. Check it out here...

Outside of that, Miami was riddled with parties. I bounced from place to place, trying to take full advantage of it. There was the Maxim Party (highly recommend), Rihanna's memorable performance on the beach, Liv at the Fontainebleau, Tao, Wall Lounge at the W, the list goes on and on. The best party I got to was the Audi party, which turned out to be a real who's who of attendees - everybody from Twilighters to Oscar winners, from athletes to top recording artists. And I loved the concept behind another party I went to which was themed sushi, sake and sunglasses. That's what you got when you walked in the door of the rooftop lounge. Simple and fun. The food was on par with how I remembered it - of course I had to do the iconic News Cafe on South Beach.  However, I chose to do that the day after the game, once it had cleared out, because South Beach earlier in the week had become a madhouse of fans, lined shoulder-to-shoulder in the streets like it was Mardi Gras.

Speaking of great places to eat, I also had to check out 2 of my LA faves - STK and Philippe - both of which were connected to my hotel, the Gansevoort. Great steakhouse and great asian cuisine, they couldn't have done it better. Coco de Ville also opened right alongside it which is another west coast transfer I looked forward to checking out. At the hotel was a great rooftop lounge, pool and bar overlooking the ocean and I had to keep reminding myself I was there for work. What better venue for an informal business meeting. That will help lighten the mood.

So it was another trip and another success. We got some great Super Bowl content, got to see a great game and met some awesome people. And to top it off, it wasn't freezing like it was at Sundance. I love Miami.

Stars of Sundance

Stars of SundanceFor 10 days out of the year, celebs brave the cold of Park City, Utah, and converge on the quaint little ski town for the Sundance Film Festival. We took our crew last weekend to cover the events, which we've done before, but it seems every year the festival grows exponentially. There's not enough time in the day to cover all the events, parties, gifting suites and concerts that take place, not to mention find time to see one of the films lucky enough to hold their premieres.

We got to spend some time with notable people throughout the course of our trip. It's not just actors and actresses that you recognize on the streets. The town fills up with musicians, sports stars and other industry VIPs to talk business in the snow. When nighttime hits, though, Main Street turns into a giant party. Places like the House of Hype brought in some great talent for concerts – John Legend and The Roots played together one night and Robin Thicke put on a great show the next. Several stars of the films were gracious enough to talk with us about the nature (and fun) that is making an independent feature, others were more inclined to talk about all the free swag they'll walk away with. You never know who you'll see out-and-about. One random run-in was with Phoenix Suns' star Steve Nash. Steve was in town to play the Utah Jazz and we met up with him at a lounge where he was watching the NFL playoff games. We had a lot of fun catching up as he talked to us about his vitaminwater commercials that are virally popular and undeniably hilarious. Check out one of them below:

Now check out our interview with the NBA star and don't miss our other Sundance coverage HERE. As you can tell, it was yet another successful Sundance.

Lost in the NBC Shuffle

Lost in the NBC ShuffleIrony at it's finest. Recently, nobody has had more reason to tune into NBC late night than to hear it's valued personalities verbally destroy their home network one monologue at a time. Viewership is shooting through the roof just as hosts are being shooed out the door. With everyone taking sides, whether be Team Conan or Team Leno, what's the fate of the fourth wheel, Last Call with Carson Daly? It's unfortunate that the VJ-turned-host is at the complete mercy of NBC suits and the decisions of the lead-ins before his allotted 1:35 EST time slot.

I've always been a fan of Carson's show. I love how he traded in the studio idea for a more informal on-location approach. Instead of going to Carson you go with Carson to meet the stars. He doesn't need a tie or a desk, but what he needs is room in the late night schedule to grow his fresh idea. If we have to wait until after our local news to get Leno, Conan and Jimmy Fallon, then Carson's program would likely cut into affiliate airtime. Bad news. So what are his options now? Here's a cool article from MTV that discusses the fallout from the recent decisions - check it out by clicking HERE.

Network giants being what they are, all the politics and red tape are enough to be sure that not everybody will be pleased with the final outcome. So until the final decision is made, I'll forfeit my free agency and join Team Carson.

Tik Tok: Time for Ke$ha

Tik Tok: Time for Ke$ha

Just as Gaga swept 2009 in a pop frenzy, somebody else is due to take 2010. From the sounds of things, it seems Ke$ha has set herself up to do just that. You may recognize her as the accompanying voice in last year's “Right Round” alongside Flo Rida. Now she's taking the spotlight herself as her new album just dropped to kick off the new year. Her single "Tik Tok" is playing at all the hot clubs and has been completely devoured by audiences, shattering internet downloading records.

Ke$ha even has the great success story to go with her rise; she had been involved with music for years but then dropped out of school to pursue it professionally. So after years of hard work, she broke out of the background (singing for Britney Spears and Katy Perry) and is making her own footprints in the music scene. Although she doesn't have the shoulder-pads and outlandish Gaga style, she may be giving the pop princess a run for her money. Just take a look at Ke$ha's video for “Tik Tok” and afterwards try to get the song out of your head...
