Unghh, Aargh! This translates to “I’m hungry” in zombiese. Zombies have worked their way into every facet of American culture over the past few decades -- movies, television, books -- and nowadays you can find zombies in essentially any of these types of entertainment. And as a zombie enthusiast, I have complied a Top Ten list of zombie movies that I feel everyone needs to see... drumroll please...
10. 28 Days Later (2002)
This is a British movie that takes a twist to the zombie plague. The “zombies” in the film are not the ordinary, classic zombies who are slow-moving and brainless. These zombies are angry, hungry, and fast. And when I say fast, I mean they all apparently ran track in high school before they turned into zombies. In this world, scientists have created a virus called “rage”, which turns people into enraged, cannibalistic zombies.
9. Resident Evil (2002)
Resident Evil is based on the video game of the same name but takes the point of view of an original character, Alice (Milla Jovovich). Alice is beautiful, smart, and she can kick some zombie butt! She finds herself accompanying a SWAT-like team into the underground ground zero of the zombie infestation, called The Hive, to contain the virus. However, the zombies may not be the biggest problem down there...
8. Fido (2006)
Fido is a film about the companionship between a boy and his pet zombie. In this world, radiation from outer space turns all the dead into zombies, but Zomcon was able to contain the zombies into communities by creating dog-like collars to control the zombies' hunger. Helen Robinson buys a zombie which she and her son Timmy name Fido, and they grow very fond of him. But one day, Fido’s collar breaks and he kills their next door neighbor and the story unfolds from there.
7. Zombieland (2009)
Zombieland is basically a rule book for surviving a zombie apocalypse. The film follows “Columbus”, who is searching for his parents to see if they are still alive. Along the way, he encounters friends, enemies, and Bill Murray. Throughout the film, the main character continues to give a second-person guide and rules for the audience. For instance: Rule #1 is "Cardio". This is a zombie movie but also a comedy, adventure, and love story.
6. Day of the Dead (1985)
Day of the Dead is the third film in George A. Romero’s zombie trilogy that takes place after Dawn of the Dead. In the film, military and scientists are working together to try to domesticate or train the zombies until a mission goes wrong and all hell breaks loose in the facility.
5. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
This remake has become one of my favorite zombie movies, which is surprising simply because it is a remake. Zack Snyder, the director, takes the original George Romero film, which takes place in a mall, and reinvents the characters that are followed in the film. The zombies are much faster and much more driven than the original, which intensifies the horror and intensity of it all. The modern-day setting makes you wonder how you would stack up if the zombie apocalypse hits.
4. Evil Dead (1981)
This movie is a horror film with a multitude of horrific monsters and demons but also have a good amount of zombies to round out the bunch. The film starts with a group of college students who are camping on their Spring Break. In the cabin, they find a book and a tape recorder that plays recordings of incantations from the book, which turns out to be the Book of the Dead, and consequently demons, zombies and other monsters are unleashed and start to attack the students.
3. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Shaun of the Dead is, in my opinion, one of the best zombie movies ever made. It is a British zombie-comedy film that take not only includes the essence of classic zombie movies but takes comedic jabs at various zombie chichés, like how stupid they are. The film follows Shaun (Simon Pegg), a regular, under-achieving guy who must now adapt to the new world around him filled with zombies. Even in the midst of the zombie apocalypse, we can take some time to laugh.
2. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
This original and second film in the Romero zombie series takes place in a mall which proves to be what others and I believe to be the best place to fortify in a zombie apocalypse. This flick embodies all the classic zombie qualities and everything you need to include if you ever want to make a zombie film. This is also the only film on my list that has both the original and the remake on it.
1. Night of the Living Dead (1966)
The first of Romero’s zombie trilogy sets the standard on any zombie movie. This film revolutionized the horror genre and created a cult-like following that grew and has yet to stop. This movie is the reason that all of the other movies on this list were made. “They’re coming to get you, Barbara.” This famous phrase originates from this film, and all I can say is, I’m glad my name isn’t Barbara.
