WOLVERINES! 'Red Dawn' Remake on the Horizon

The 2012 Eighties Nostalgia Tour keeps on truckin’!

As if an “ALF” movie weren’t enough (it is), another classic from the Day-Glo Decade is making a comeback to the big screen, and once more I consider it my duty to enlighten you as to why this is a big deal.

28 years ago, Red Dawn was a movie that combined elements of things that weighed heavily on our minds at the time – the Cold War with Russia, and hot teen idols. The plot focused on a group of teenage kids, led by the three Eckert brothers, who decide to get all vigilante up in this beyotch when the Soviets march into town and try to take over. The film starred some of the biggest young up-and-coming actors of the day, including Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey (pre-Dirty Dancing), Lea Thompson, C. Thomas Howell, and a sane Charlie Sheen, all armed with uzis and great hair. Think Rambo meets "Saved By the Bell".

Now, Red Dawn is getting a 21st century upgrade, but this time, it’s those pesky North Koreans that are invading the good ol’ U.S.of A. (which kind of makes the title obsolete -- the “Red” in the original referred to the Soviet Army… I guess Communists are Communists…). The trailer has just been released for this remake, and as far as I can tell, many of the same elements save for the nationality of the invading army seem to be in place, right down to the names of the characters. This version also involves sexy high school students, a small-town take-over, and lots of explosions. This cast is another great crop of rising stars, including Chris Hemsworth (in the Swayze role), Josh Hutcherson (in Howell’s role), Adrianne Padicki (in Grey’s role), Isabel Lucas (in Thompson’s role), and Josh Peck (as Sheen’s character). Also rounding out the cast are Tom Cruise’s son, Connor, “Make It Or Break It” DILF Brett Cullen, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Col. Andy Tanner, who leads the rag-tag group of warriors (dubbed the Wolverines) into battle.

From what I can surmise, it looks like this classic scene will not be recreated:

Bummer!

Oh well. Red Dawn opens November 21.
