Michael C. Hall as "Dexter"

If it weren't for the invention of the DVR, life would be so boring. Or, we'd have to go outside.

Sometimes we can't be active and have to spend some time resting -- as I did after a recent surgery. My BFF recommended "Dexter," so after missing the first 4 seasons, it was time to catch up. Thank you, Showtime On Demand!

I'm not going to spoil anything by telling you he's a killer. That's the whole point of the show, but there's a twist. Dexter is one of the good guys.

Killer with a code: Dexter Morgan only takes his crazy out on criminals. He is the judge, jury, and executioner of bad guys. It's sort of heroic yet obviously wrong.

Dark humor: For a show about a serial killer, "Dexter" winks at the audience with sick side jokes and puns that keeps the series light and upbeat.

Family man: Dexter surrounds himself with friends and family, but they're so wrapped up in their own drama they have no idea they're aiding and abetting his deadly hobby. His intricate lies and levels of deception are often unraveled, only to be expertly covered up by more deception.

Top cop: Working as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police, Dexter is hands-on when it comes to crime, giving him the ultimate insider information -- and cover.

It gets complicated: As the series evolves, so does Dexter. While he used to kill as a way to pay back guilty parties who got away, his downward spiraling moral compass drives him to fake evidence so the police miss their man. It's sort of hard to kill people when they're in jail.

Head games: Dexter's thought process is so well-defined that eventually the viewer begins to understand why he must lie to everyone, skip out on his job, and put himself in jeopardy time and time again. His compulsion drives him, the series, and eventually you're rooting for him to KILL AGAIN!

Cuter than creepy: Actor Michael C. Hall expertly plays a very non-creepy-looking dude with a deep, dark secret. It's kind of hot. Everything about this show -- the character, the storylines, everything -- is hidden in subtext. Nothing is what it seems on the surface.

"Dexter" Season 4 is currently playing on Showtime On Demand; Seasons 1-3 are on DVD.
