Summer is finally here! And you know what that means -- surfing, sailing, fishing, tanning, ice cream-eating, and all-around relaxing.
After enjoying endless hours of the frolicking in the sun, there’s nothing we love more than curling up on the couch with a classic movie for those lazy summer nights. So here we go, a list of the best summer flicks (in no particular order), complete with sunny beaches, romantic flings, and the ever-present vacay dramas...
1. Jaws (1975)
Steven Spielberg’s epic thriller is the one film ultimately responsible for creating the summer blockbuster genre. The movie tells the story of a tourism-dependent New England beach town that is taken by surprise when a great white shark embarks on a feeding frenzy, attacking swimmers off Amity Island’s shore. Who doesn’t love a good shark tale?
2. Dirty Dancing (1987)
It might be a chick flick, but there’s nothing girly about the way Patrick Swayze dances. Boys, take note! In this summer camp flick, Swayze’s dance instructor character has Jennifer Grey falling in love, and fast. Grab this classic, listen to great music, and watch Baby mature into the flawlessly wonderful dance queen she longs to be.
3. Sandlot (1993)
This family comedy is definitely one for the ages. Scotty Smalls and the other neighborhood boys get themselves into all kinds of trouble and adventure with entertaining baseball games, tree house sleepovers, and the infamous ball-eating dog, The Beast. And lest we forget, this is the one movie that taught us one very timeless lesson: fake-drown if you want a kiss from the cute lifeguard!
4. Grease (1978)
Sandy and Danny steal our hearts in this legendary musical about summer flings and rekindled love. The story is one thing, the costumes another, but the music just takes it to an entirely different, untouchable level. If it weren’t for Grease, we wouldn’t have our favorite summer anthem, an oldie but a goody, “Summer Nights”.
5. Blue Crush (2002)
Cheesy story? Maybe. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this film has everything you could ever wish for in summer flick. The crystal clear waves, the blazing sun, and, of course, the cute boy who falls in love with the fabulously hot blonde girl. Kate Bosworth almost has us thinking that we could take to the beach, hop on a board, and surf Pipeline...
