If you don't know about Tokio Hotel your eyes might not believe what your ears are hearing. One simply cannot address the band without mention of frontman Bill Kaulitz's gender-bending emo-meets-manga style sensibilities. Yah, that's a dude! Not since Boy George ruled the 80s has androgyny been so mainstream. Selling millions of records in Germany, Bill and the boys have become a European sensation. Though they derive their name from the famous Japanese city, the group has German origins (Tokio is the German language spelling of Tokyo). After erupting to such huge success in their native land, the next step in world domination was hitting the worldwide market. With the release of their first English language album, Scream, the band has continued to soar, even landing a VMA nom this year for Best New Artist! It's always been a dream of our to make it in the States, Bill says. We grew up listening to American bands like Metallica, Green Day and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. We wanted to get a chance to do what they do. He sings in English for the first time on Scream, which is the product of songs from Tokio Hotel's previous two albums - Schrei and Zimmer 483. The biggest music act out of Germany in twenty years, the band is now stateside, hitting Hollywood and Highland for a big free show in September - with performances that follow through December from Cleveland and Detroit to sold-out shows in Chicago and San Francisco. Breaking cultural barriers and daring to be different; Tokio Hotel is changing the way the world looks at music! Word.
