The Sweet Smell of Success for Celebrity Scents

Even he can't believe it, apparently...!

The sale of fragrances continues to climb, largely because of celebrity endorsed and inspired scents. The market is overrun with these types of perfumes. Musicians, television and movie stars, and even reality stars, have made their way into the fragrance industry. It has become the next logical step in expanding a celebrity brand.

The first big celebrity perfume was Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds. To this day, it is one of the top-selling perfumes on the market. It revolutionized the fragrance industry, and opened the door to the countless celebrities that have come since.

After watching movies or music videos, listening to albums, or even seeing a concert, there is a bond created between celebrity and fan. So many celebrity perfumes are targeted towards a younger audience simply because this bond exists.

Celebrity perfumes sell. I can attest to this. Why? I own 14 different perfumes... every last one of them endorsed by a celebrity.

Knowing full well that these perfumes are just another marketing ploy, why do I continue to buy them? For starters, I love perfume. Beyond that, the admiration I've had for Britney Spears since elementary school causes me to pick up her latest perfume without realizing I have done it. It has gotten so bad that I bought Forbidden Rose by Avril Lavigne without even smelling it first!

Celebrity perfumes will keep selling so long as people continue to feel that bond with a celebrity. A trusted name endorsing a product gives consumers a reason to want to like something. The product will have to speak for itself, but the big name attached to it gets people into the store to try it out.

As for me, Beyoncé has a new fragrance, Pulse, coming out next month. Will it become a part of my collection? Time will tell...
