Back in March, I told y’all about Stephenie Meyer’s first post-Twilight project, The Host, and how I might actually spend money to see it. The fact that it was co-written and directed by Andrew Niccol (who helmed Gattaca, Lord of War, and In Time, as well as wrote The Truman Show and The Terminal) sure don’t hurt either.
The first official trailer has been released in conjunction with the swan song of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, and once again I find myself way more intrigued by this follow-up project than I ever was about the emo adventures of Edward and Bella. To recap the story briefly: Earth has been invaded by pacifist aliens, who have deemed the human race too violent and lame and thus taken over their bodies to create a more peaceful society. There are a few whole humans left, and they don’t cotton to the aliens' touchy-feely ways. This includes a gal named Melanie, who herself gets “infected” but her strong will allows her to actually live symbiotically with her alien invader (named Wanderer). It’s a very interesting concept dealing with the themes of free will and if it should be absolute, even when the ideas being forced upon on us are benevolent ones. Such a dilemma!
Niccol’s touches are evident in the trailer, giving us some breathtaking shots infused with heart-pounding action. Saoirse Ronan, who is quite possibly one of my favorite young actresses right now, looks utterly convincing as a young woman who is… not quite complete anymore.
Check out the new trailer below and let us know your thoughts!
The Host will open on March 29, 2013.
