The Donnas

These chicks rock! The Donnas have transformed themselves from junior high geekets to spunky rock girl legends of the new millennium.

I'm always down to see a live show, but even here in Los Angeles there are few all girl bands that I've watched kick it on stage. The few I have seen were basically trying to be The Donnas. It's hard to emulate such a rare and special thing.

For The Donnas, it is truly just that. Their story plays out like something from a movie. Four girls, all born the same year, form a rock band and bust out on the scene at age thirteen - eventually all adopting (and later dropping) Donna monikers to form what has become the hottest all female band in the world. How has Disney not opted this?

The appeal of the band is easy to grasp. They're down to earth and make fun music. They flat out refuse to insult their audience with some overworked image and they're not obsessed with parading around like sex kittens. They're originals who have their own sense of style without help from a team of consultants.

Real girls everywhere breathe a sigh of relief.

After fourteen years in the biz the band makes a great deal of effort to give their Donnaholics fan club members a little something extra, like super cool events with VIP access only for them. Just recently, they held their second Desert Moon festival, a day and night long festival where they rocked back-to-back sets in the California desert (I'm wicked depressed I had to miss it for personal reasons). There was even a giant barbeque and raffle giveaway!

While I'm sore I couldn't score some of that backstage memorabilia (from their most recent album Bitchin'), I'm going to make up for it by hitting them up at the Hard Rock at Universal City at the end of the month. The Donnas are on the road through November - catch it!

Word.
