So, apparently, Snoop Dogg was totes serious about that whole changing-his-name-and-going-reggae thing…
Earlier this week, as you’ve probably heard, the rap star announced that he was changing his name to the more feliney “Snoop Lion” and that he would be adopting a new, more reggae-focused sound, stemming from an evidently profound experience while visiting Jamaica recently. To that end, he stated that he was completely retooling his next album to reflect this revelation, co-produced by Diplo and Major Lazer; this album, appropriately titled Reincarnation, will be released some time later this year.
And in case y’all were doubting the Dogg, er, the Lion’s sincerity, he’s gone ahead and released the first single off the new album, “La La La”, and it’s pretty much everything he promised. It is definitely reggae, and it’s definitely kind of weird to hear Snoop sing instead of spinning his trademark laidback rap style, but the old hip-hop influences are still present. It’s a different sound, not only for him, but for the genre itself. Take a listen below:
Time will tell if this whole thing actually lasts or if it will be like that time Snoop said he was giving up smoking weed for good…
What do you guys think of Snoop’s new sound?
