Flo Rida is bumping on my laptop and suddenly everyone wants to get in on my Elevator action.Mind you, I'm on full blast outside by the pool, where my neighbors are barbequing. I wasn't necessarily invited but it's my apartment building too and I do what I want. Plus, I was hoping my dope jams would score me a kabob and a beer. The crowd is decidedly outside the usual rap demographic (excluding myself, a typical cross-section includes an over fifty crowd), but even so everyone is bobbing their head.Naturally, it does not surprise me when I'm asked why the song is about an Elevator.Actually, it's a term that's used to describe simultaneous relationships with a number different people. Each floor on the elevator represents a different partner on that individual's elevator. The lyrics also say this particular girl is stuck on his elevator, possibly meaning he's unable to get past this one romance and is unable to move to another floor. Or maybe she's just part of the permanent rotation. Either way, I'm tempted to believe that this is a love song of sorts. I think it's as close as you're going to get. This is coming from a dude who toured with 2 Live Crew as a teenager."Elevator" has turned out to be Flo Rida's big breakthrough song, featuring none other than the man with the golden touch, Timbaland. Not that Flo Rida needs such a heavy to make his mark. He's been doing that all on his own for years, earning a fan base by appearing on popular mixtapes, most notably with his single off We the Best by DJ Khaled in 2006.But none of my neighbors know that. They don't need to. It doesn't matter that none of them typically identify with hip-hop. The power of music transcends everything. That's what good music does; it connects people, no matter where you come from, how old you are -- or even if you're just looking to score something fresh off the barbie!--Wes
