SUNDAY MUSIC VIDS: Kat Graham

When the funky, fierce, and fashionable Ms. Kat Graham visited the YH Studio recently, she told us a little white lie; R.J. Williams asked her what other talents she had besides singing, dancing, and acting, and she declared that that was it. Not so! Turns out, Kat is a pretty decent songwriter too; she’s also fluent in three languages, and passable in a couple others as well (for those keeping score, that’s FIVE different languages in her repertoire… muy bien!).

There was also some discussion about whether Kat is an actress-turned-singer or the other way around. Kat, known best as Bonnie Bennett on “The Vampire Diaries”, maintains that music has been in her life just as long, if not longer, than her acting career. This, it turns out, is indeed accurate. In her teen years, Kat’s dancing is what got her noticed on a larger scale and put her on the path to stardom. Long before her own solo music career and stint on the hit CW series, Kat could be seen busting a move on stage behind such A-list acts as Bow Wow (back when he was still Lil), Pharrell, and Missy Elliot. This in turn led to numerous appearances in music videos for the likes of Justin Bieber, Christina Milian, Akon, Nelly, John Legend, and more.

It wasn’t until a fateful meeting with Will.i.am that Kat really got to stretch her musical legs. After some collabos and tours with the Black Eyed Peas, it was time to show the world that she deserved the spotlight, and in May of this year, she debuted her first album, Against the Wall, for A&M/Octone Records, and her first solo single, “Put Your Graffiti On Me”, which peaked at #5 on the U.S. Dance charts. Not too shabby!

We look forward to many more fantastic things to come for Kat. In the meantime, let’s take a look back at her very storied music video past, culminating in her starring turn in “Put Your Graffiti On Me”!
