As London prepares to host the Olympic Games in a couple of months, fashion designers are turning to the world of sport for inspiration for their new collections. With sleek, figure-hugging dresses and bright neon colors, this year's fashion will certainly get you noticed.
At London Fashion Week, Peter Pilotto and his partner Christopher De Vos premiered their collection, which was reminiscent of a swimwear range. Silk dresses with cutout mesh panels were amongst the collection. But it's not just the cut of the clothing which is evoking sportswear -- it is also the colors. Designers are opting for slightly shiny material and bright neon colors such as yellow and green prints, using the Olympic theme to bring a sense of health and activity to their fashions. With sleeker fashion shapes, more vibrant colors, and sculpted fabrics, clothing for 2012 will most definitely put a strain on people to get in shape!
Spectators of the Olympics will not be alone in adorning this sexy sportswear look. Britain's Olympic team will don outfits designed by Stella McCartney this summer, and the shades of red, navy, gold, and blue she chose for the kit featured prominently on the catwalk at London Fashion Week. The link between sports and fashion is stronger than ever this year!
Sports icons, instead of music or film stars, are suddenly turning into muses for different fashion and beauty brands. British track and field Olympian Jessica Ennis is the new face of Olay’s Essentials range, and with her flawless skin, her natural beauty radiates. But why have Olay opted from using their usual A-list celebrities? The pressure from society to be in good shape -- healthy, as opposed to skinny -- is taking over, so to stay popular, beauty and fashion brands are opting for healthy sports icons to face their campaigns, proving you don’t need to be beautiful to be healthy!
One sports icon that has turned into one of the biggest fashion icons in the world is none other than soccer star David Beckham. Of course, having the most stylish wife in the world has to help, but Mr. Beckham has used his fit physique and dashing good looks to become the muse for multiple underwear brands such as Armani and H&M. Beckham has showed the world that being a sports star doesn’t mean living in Adidas tracksuits -- you can dress up in a Armani suit and still be known for your talent as a sportsman.
2012 is not only a year for sporting excellence, but it also a year of fashion revolutions. We are excited to see how sports and fashion play together for 2012!
