'Social Network' Producers Win '50 Shades' Movie Bidding War

Initial buzz around the cinematic future of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy included talks of X-ratings, but it doesn’t seem to be a taking a porn route after all. Two of the producers that worked on The Social Network, Michael DeLuca and Dana Brunetti, have reportedly turned the corner and jumped on board for the movie adaption of E.L. James’s risqué and explosively popular first book. The author herself approved the producers, and they beat out some tough competition.

The erotic fiction trilogy follows the experiences of recent college graduate, Anastasia Steele, falling in love with slightly older billionaire, Christian Grey, who has a significant taste for bondage. There will, of course, be plenty of sexy time in the film, but plans are to keep it tasteful. Universal co-chair Donna Langley has said, “At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen.”

With Universal Pictures and Focus Features winning the rights to the trilogy in a $5 million deal, and a reported 20 million book copies sold since March, you can bet we’ll see the release of the film as soon as possible. So there’s the upcoming movie and then the potential Fifty Shades lingerie and perfume products that are supposedly in the works as well... Erotica goes mainstream!

Up next… film casting. As of right now, any word on actor involvement has only been speculation. And/or prayers. The trilogy was originally a Twilight fanfiction, so Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are obvious choices, but fans are blogging about the hopes of everyone from Ryan Gosling and Kellan Lutz to Evan Rachel Wood and Jennifer Lawrence. Stay tuned!
