Shoulders That Say Something

Fashion forward divas like Rihanna are displaying shoulders in full bloom. Big sleeves have worked their way back into style!

From delicate, ornate little ruffles to the extreme like Lady Gaga's seemingly constant homage to Tina Tuner in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, fashionistas everywhere are giving this look a whirl.

These shoulder extensions can play many parts, from the daring artist to demure and feminine. It's all about shape, size, and proportions. If you want to wear this look, keep a few things in mind:

Wide set shoulders are going to look over-exaggerated if the trend is taken too far. Build up, not out. Jackets, blazers and coats can be puffed up with just a little padding. Specialized shoulder pads are available at websites like shoulderpads.com dedicated entirely to these form-fitting fashion wonders. Yes, there's a website for everything. Thanks, internet!

Frilly shoulder puffs work well to dress up a blouse, very girly and playful - but it can border on old fashioned. You want to pair with edgier bottoms to avoid looking like an old timey librarian. Form fitting jeans or a short skirt work the look, while an ankle length hem is totally out.

Another option, sans puffs or pads, is elongated. The seam extends beyond the top of the shoulder, creating a widening effect. Unless you're aiming at extremes, keep body shape and size in check to find the right length to avoid looking frumpy.

Whatever your look, keep it poppin' with shoulders that say something!
