Last month, Icelandic ambiance rockers Sigur Rós released their latest album, Valtari, and like any band worth their salt, they knew they would have to put out some music vids to compliment their new music visually. But sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day, you guys.
So, the group left the music videoing in the hands of others for this album, assigning a dozen or so filmmakers with the task of choosing one song from the album, giving them a $10,000 budget, and leaving them to their own devices. Because, apparently, they can do that. Why not?
Israeli filmmaker Alma Har’el perused the album and chose “Fjögur píanó” for her inspiration, and she cast Hollywood star Shia LaBeouf to breath life into her vision.
And what an eyeful it is, folks. Obviously, I cannot post the extremely NSFW video here, but I will provide a link for you lookie-loos at the bottom of this page. Once you get past the initial kneejerk giggles of seeing nekkid people and stuff, this video is actually quite lovely. If someone’s awful, abusive, co-dependent relationship were turned into performance art, it would look like this. This is probably the video Eminem and Rihanna wanted to make for “Love The Way You Lie”. In it, we see LaBeouf and little known actress Denna Thomsen (her entire IMDb resume consists of the coveted roles of “Dancer” and “Drugged Girl #4”) as they go through the motions of their twisted relationship in the form of classical dance. Then, some apparent bad guys (drug dealers?) show up and give them lollipops that light up when you lick them, and then all sorts of wackiness ensues, including a hallucinated joyride, and a room full of framed, dead butterflies, which seems to bum everyone out, all to the moody, ambient sounds of the song. It’s raw, it’s vulnerable, it’s violent, and it’s a visual masterpiece. Gotta love auteur, experimental filmmaking.
If you have the stomach and are a MATURE adult, check out the video here.
