Shhh! My Stories Are Coming Back On(line)!

When I was about 12 years old, I became obsessed with “All My Children” and “One Life To Live”… Like, can’t-leave-for-school-until-the-VCR-is-set-to-record kind of obsessed. Like, bring-a-portable-TV-on-a-camping-trip-so-I-don’t-miss-an-episode obsessed. Thankfully, I moved on to other things after a couple years, so when the news came that both soap operas would be cancelled in 2011, I was only mildly disheartened. Mostly I felt bad for Susan Lucci, since she would be out of a job she’d steadily held since 1970.
Objectively speaking, though, it was quite a shock. These two ABC series – both created by Agnes Nixon – were daytime TV staples for over 40 years. You just take for granted that, everyday starting at 1:00, the soaps come on. Even if you go, say, 10 years without watching one, you know you can stay home sick from work one day, flip on “AMC”, and see the same characters still doing the same crap as they were when you left off. I mean, seriously, are they keeping Adam Chandler in a cryogenic chamber?? For decades, housewives everywhere had something to look forward to while they did their daily ironing. And weird 6th graders rapturously came home from school everyday to a video tape full of juicy new chapters in the lives of the residents of Hill Valley and Llanview.
Well, hope those same housewives know how to use a computer, because it has been officially announced that both “All My Children” and “One Life To Live” will be revived exclusively online through a brand new yet-to-be-launched Website called, appropriately enough, The Online Network. Production company Prospect Park has picked up the serials to resume production effective soon in their Stamford, CT, studios. No word yet if Susan Lucci will be part of the deal, but new details should be unveiled shortly.
Strike up the dramatic organ music and keep up with all the latest developments via The Online Network website!
