Ryan Reynolds Steps Into Immortal Role for 'Highlander' Remake

There can only be one… Well, at least until Hollywood needs to scratch another reboot itch!

In 1986, we were explicitly told that there was only one Highlander – specifically, Connor MacLeod (played by Christopher Lambert). In fact, it was Sean Connery himself who told us this, and we would never have any reason to doubt S.Conn. But to be fair, this was before anyone had heard of Ryan Reynolds.

It has just been announced that RyRey has been cast in a remake of Highlander as the immortal Mr. MacLeod. For those not up to date on their ‘80s sci-fi cult franchises, Highlander is the tale of a group of immortals who get together every century or so to duel each other to the death until just one remains. The big prize for being the last man standing? Mortality. In other words, you either die a violent death, or you win the right to die in peace on your own terms. Heavy!

Reynolds, who first burst onto the scene in goofball comedies like Van Wilder and Just Friends, has steadily being clawing his way to more intense fare. He was pretty creeptastic in the Amityville Horror remake, I’ll give him that, and his foray into superhero territory with The Green Lantern spoke to his abilities as an action star. Perhaps Highlander will be the perfect formula for finding Ryan’s true niche in Hollywood. Just too bad they had to rehash an old classic to get there. Let’s hope it works out…
