Rooney Mara (Youth in Revolt, 2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street remake) is set to play Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming David Fincher flick adapted from Stieg Larsson's first book in his best-selling Millennium trilogy. The series has become a posthumous bestseller since its 2005 publication after Larsson's untimely death. The books have already been adapted into highly successful Swedish films "" some of the country's most viewed ever "" that received worldwide distribution and acclaim.
Mara will be starring alongside Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who enlists Lisbeth to help him track down a woman who has been missing for forty years. Lisbeth is a brilliant, damaged, and emotionally void computer hacker-turned-private investigator that comes to Blomkvist's aid when an industrial tycoon hires him to solve the mystery of his great-niece's disappearance. The 16-year-old girl seemingly vanished from the family's island four decades ago, making the case all the more eerie and intriguing.
The role of Lisbeth requires an actress that is able to reveal her scars without revealing any open wounds, to be fierce and guarded, but loyal and determined. An extremely complex character, several famous young women were rumored to be in the running for the role, including Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman, Emma Watson, Ellen Page, and Scarlett Johansson. The relatively unknown Mara might be able to use this anonymity to her advantage in playing the mysterious and withdrawn Ms. Salander.
She'll be seen first, however, in Fincher's upcoming film starring Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake, The Social Network, about the creators of Facebook. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is slated for a December 2011 release.
Are you happy with this casting choice? If not, whom would you have picked?
