Before they were seducing audiences with their mis-en-scene, these directors were already captivating fans with their howling heavy metal screams, metal guitars licks, and machine gun drum fills. Not content to earn the director's chair through the traditional disciplines of cinematography, screenwriting, or acting, these modern day movie maestros graduated from the school of rock. Gore Verbinski With the biggest opening weekend in history under his belt, Gore Verbinski can rightfully claim the title of Biggest Director in the World. A virtuoso at crafting stylish, glossy images on demand for the major studios, Gore learned much of his craft by making award winning ad campaigns. On his way to winning four Clio awards, Gore invented the famous Budweiser Frogs. But, did you know that the 1987 graduate of the prestigious UCLA film school was also guitarist of punk band, The Daredevils, with Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion and Josh Freese of The Vandals? He also played guitar for the punk band, Little Kings. In fact, his love of music drove him to create music videos for alternative bands in the 80's, including acts like L7. His distinctive style became more refined with each subsequent project. Gore went on to direct Mousehunt, The Ring, The Mexican, and all three films in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Michel Gondry A talented drummer, Michel played in a pop-rock band called Oui-Oui. The band released 2 albums and several singles until their separation in 1992. Gondry used his position as drummer to begin to take a leading role in the group's music videos, effectively launching his filmmaking career. He eventually attracted the attention of music artist, Bj
