Ricky Gervais to Return... to the Golden Globes??

Well it looks like the Golden Globes are throwing their arms open with a “Welcome back, Ricky Gervais!”

The Hollywood Foreign Press has allegedly chosen the actor for another round of Master of Ceremonies. His host title comes as a surprise to many, based on his controversial performance last time around that included poking fun/cynically insulting heavy hitters Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, Robert Downey Jr., John Travolta, Charlie Sheen, and even the show itself when he touched on a lawsuit that alleged shady business around the nomination and award process. Gervais stood behind his performance for the most part; as did the Hollywood Foreign Press, despite rampant talks that he might not return.

The actor’s unpredictability seems to be a hit with the public, that’s why we’re drawn to him in the first place. Don’t forget Gervais’s pedigree of being a writer, producer, and cast member on the original "Office". This guy is ripe with British humor and spews sarcasm nonstop such as in tweets like: “Thanks to everyone for sending me slightly misquoted sentences I said in conversation on the radio at the turn of the century. Flattered.”

He’s unapologetic for his persona, and while his quips may be cringe-inducing, we’re also intrigued. Very intrigued. There’s no denying the fact that we’re still talking about last year's show, or, just as importantly, the viewing numbers. Talk about hype.

Do you think we can expect a cleaned up and toned down Ricky Gervais at this year’s Golden Globes or some of the same? As they say in Hollywood, any press is good press.

The 69th Annual Golden Globes airs Sunday January 15, 2012, on NBC.
