A year ago this past weekend, the whole world watched in wonder as a true life fairy tale unfolded before our very eyes.

 

A year on from when the dashing Prince William took Kate Middleton, his beautiful princess, to be the future Queen of England, we look at other extravagant weddings that have also caught the attention of the world.

 

Prior to the marriage of William and Kate, the most infamous royal wedding of all was the wedding of William’s parents, Charles the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. In June 1981, a global audience of over 750 million people watched the royal wedding... which cost the British taxpayer an estimated 4 million pounds. 

 

Extravagance was the name of the day, though, when we moved into the '90s with the star-studded marriages of premier football stars such as David Beckham, who rented a castle for his nuptials to Victoria, and Wayne Rooney, who spent an estimated 15 million dollars on his 4-day Italian wedding to Colleen McLouglin, where guests were flown in by private jet to attend the occasion.

 

However, what is recorded as the most expensive wedding in history was not between any celebrity couple or even royalty but was held by an Indian couple, Vanisha Mittal and Amit Bhatia, who spent an estimated 20 million dollars on their 5-day wedding in 2004! With private performances by stars such as Kylie Minogue and a guest list topping 1,000 friends and family, this lavish affair -- held in one of France’s finest chateaus -- leaves our other weddings in the shade.

 

Regardless of who invited whom and who spent what, weddings are a happy time for all, and the real question is, who is still together and who will be next to top the Most Extravagant list?
