Profiling the Profiler: "Criminal Minds" Star Matthew Gray Gubler

Matthew Gray Gubler, who plays genius FBI profiler Dr. Spencer Reid on the hit CBS show "Criminal Minds", is a man of many talents. Not only is he a skilled actor, but also a very talented director and artist and all-around unique individual.

Matthew’s career began while he was in film school at NYU when a model scout discovered him. Soon after, he began working for big names in fashion, including Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, and American Eagle. It wasn’t long before he landed an internship with Wes Anderson, who offered him the role of Nico (Intern #1) in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Soon after that, Matthew was cast as Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid in the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI on "Criminal Minds", which is heading into its 8th season next week. Although he is best known for his role on the hit show, "The Gube" (as he so lovingly refers to himself) has also appeared alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the smash hit indie (500) Days of Summer and provides the voice for Simon in the Alvin and The Chipmunks animated movies.

Although Matthew is a phenomenal actor, filmmaking is his absolute passion. In fact, he’s directed three episodes of "Criminal Minds": “Mosely Lane” (5.16), “Lauren” (6. 18), and “Heathridge Manor” (7.19). The actor also showcases his talents in “Matthew Gray Gubler: The Unauthorized Documentary”, a mockumentary of himself on the set of Criminal Minds, as well as a short horror film called “The Cactus That Looked Just Like a Man”, in which a socially inept city slicker crosses paths with a psychopath.

To add even more to his repertoire of talents, The Gube is also a very skilled artist. In “Meet Matthew Gray Gubler”, a short documentary about the actor on the Season One bonus features of the "Criminal Minds" DVD, Matthew shows off his unique artwork and talks about how everyday people inspire him. He often posts his artwork on his Twitter account and his Tumblr. You can even purchase clothing with his artwork on it, but items are known to sell out quickly, so check back frequently if you’d like to own some wearable Gubler art!

So, what’s next for The Gube? The actor is currently busy filming the rest of Season 8 of "Criminal Minds", and hopefully we’ll be able to see him showcase his directing talents for at least one episode this season.

If you can’t get enough of Matthew Gray Gubler, be sure to check out his Tumblr and follow him on Twitter, and also catch him as everyone’s favorite television genius every Wednesday at 9pm starting September 26 on CBS!
