At this year’s CinemaCon, the animation juggernaut Pixar shared some exciting news about their future films. Held in Las Vegas, animation chief John Lasseter revealed that Pixar is pursuing a film based around the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, set to be released in 2015. Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich is set to helm the film, with Darla K. Anderson producing. Surprisingly, Tim Burton is currently not involved in the project.
The film appears to have a rather gothic-like feel to it, similar to Burton and Henry Selick’s stop-motion features. Dia de los Muertos, which is celebrated in Mexico, Brazil, and Spain, as well as in many Asian and African countries, takes place around the same time that Americans celebrate Halloween. The holiday involves friends and families gathering to pray for and remember those who have died, and the festival is known for its artwork depicting colorful skulls, skeletons, and corpses.
In addition to the Dia de los Muertos project, Pixar is currently working on The Good Dinosaur, set to be released in May 2014. The film focuses on a world where dinosaurs did not become extinct and live among us. Pixar is also currently working on an untitled project that takes you inside the mind, as well as finishing up a sequel to the adorable Monsters Inc., entitled Monsters University. The sequel, which is set to be released in June 13, 2013, will take an inside look at the friendship between Mike and Sully while they attended the University of Fear -- before they could be called the best of friends.
Meanwhile, parent company Disney announced a few exciting projects of their own. Disney revealed that there will be a sequel to The Muppets, as well as released some of the first footage from the highly anticipated Oz: The Great and Powerful. Tim Burton also showed footage from his upcoming black and white stop-motion film, Frankenweenie, set to be released on October 5.
