Mindy Kaling is taking the reigns on her own TV show, "The Mindy Project" (as writer, producer, and star), which will debut on Fox this fall.
The main character Mindy Lahiri is a successful OBGYN with an obsession with romantic comedies and a need to clean up her social life, hence the “project” aspect of the title. You can expect a lot of pop culture references throughout the show, including homages to Nora Ephron films and "Game of Thrones".
The show will be executive produced by Matt Warburton and co-stars Chris Messina (Danny), Anna Camp (Gwen), Zoe Jarman (Betsy), Ike Barinholtz (Morgan), Amanda Setton (Shauna), and Stephen Tobolowsky (Dr. Shulman).
While the show isn’t set to air until September 25, the pilot will be available for online viewing August 27 via Fox.com, Hulu, AOL, and Yahoo. This seems to be a new tactic for hooking in and testing an audience; Fox is debuting another show online the same day as Mindy’s.
Don’t worry, fans of "The Office" -- while Mindy Kaling will be busy appearing in her own doctor’s office this fall, she’ll also be returning for some time at Dunder Mifflin. You’ll get to see a different side of Mindy’s emotions in the new show, as she explains: “I'm someone who loves romance ... most people who grew up as nerds love romance… As a comedy writer on 'The Office', so much of the show was disguising your true feelings and your romantic feelings because it was a mock-documentary. I think a lot of this is a reaction to that.”
