Ladies and gentlemen, we finally have our Gamemaker! Philip Seymour Hoffman has officially joined the cast of the wildly anticipated Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Hoffman received an official offer for the coveted role in June and he has finally agreed to star in the upcoming film.
Slated for a November 2013 release date, Catching Fire will once again feature Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) as they deal with the aftermath of the 74th annual Hunger Games. Hoffman will play Plutarch Heavensbee, the new gamemaker for the Hunger Games. (Wes Bentley played the Gamemaker in the first film, and, well, you all remember what happened to him...)
I, for one, think that this is excellent casting and that Hoffman will do an outstanding job in the film. Hoffman has proved time and again that he is not only a versatile actor, but that he knows what he is doing. From the quirky comedy Along Came Polly to the controversial drama Doubt, Hoffman continues to shine in every role he acquires. He even won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his take on the writer Truman Capote in 2005's Capote.
Later this year, Hoffman will be seen in the Paul Thomas Anderson drama The Master before he tackles the role Heavensbee. Although the two parts are vastly different from one another, there is no doubt in my mind that Hoffman will do a fantastic job in both movies. Let the games begin!
