Ok, so maybe you didn't get an invitation to the Oscars (me either!), but we still want to look our very best to show up those catty bitches criticizing every inch and fashion choice! If you've got a big event coming up, here's how to jump start a total body makeover:
Fitness icon Kathy Smith volunteered her expertise to guide me through an intense 3 week program to demonstrate how anyone, celebrity or not, can drop the pounds and tone up for their next red carpet(ish) moment.
3 WEEKS BEFORE OSCARS:
1) Shake off the salt, shrug off the sugar. Cutting back on sodium is key to avoid extra water retention, while avoiding sugar means avoiding empty calories that often lead to unnecessary weight gain.
2) Find full-body moves. Try movements that incorporate multiple muscle groups. For example: Instead of just running on a treadmill, try rowing or kickboxing. Not only will you up your calorie burn, but you'll avoid plateaus so that you can continue seeing results until the big day.
3) Do a diuretic diet. Diuretic foods can actually be good for you. Not only do they help eliminate excess water, but many of them are also fiber-filled veggies loaded with skin-friendly antioxidants, like asparagus, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, and just about anything raw and green.
4) Put the weight on your shoulders. Most Oscar gowns show off the shoulders and arms, so don't shy away from upper body work. Overhead presses will help you get sexy shoulders like Jennifer Garner's, while dumbbell kickbacks will sculpt those hard-to-target tricep muscles, so that you can transform batwings into arms like Jessica Biels'.
5) Seek out citrus. Citrus fruits are great sources of fiber and skin-friendly vitamin C and folate, which boosts serotonin levels.
6) 100 more! In your next strength training session, pick a set of light weights that you can do 100 repetitions of your favorite move. That's right, I said 100: While it's still important to incorporate heavier weights in your routine, the 100 technique is a great way to shock your system by working to failure.
Next week: phase 2...!
