If the Brothers Grimm were alive today and really big fans of Quentin Tarantino, I think it would go a little something like this…
Once upon a time, in a land of Holly and Wood, the townfolk were under a wicked spell which made them obsessed with fairy tales, and they worked slavishly to produce as much material based on these old legends as possible. The latest result of these all-consuming efforts was a little tale called Hansel and Gretel.
Fear not, though, gentle reader, for these innocent victims of pop culture’s oppressive tyranny had ways of both pandering to the needs of the salivating masses while shrewdly injecting some spice of originality. To that end, Hansel and Gretel actually picks up where the fairy tale left off – the brother and sister, now grown and clearly scarred from their brief encounter with a cannibalistic witch as children, have made it their life’s duty to eradicate the world of these creatures. (Pray they never stumble upon Hogwarts, amirite?) Jeremy Renner stars as Hansel, the culimination of his resent stints as Hawkeye and Jason Bourne. Gemma Arterton plays his sis Gretel, reminding us why she was once a contender for a big screen version of Wonder Woman. The movie is directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola, who actually made a spoof in his native country of Tarantino’s Kill Bill films, entitled Kill Buljo… need I say more?
Feast your eyes, boys and girls, on the first trailer for Wirkola’s gritty, leather-clad update of the Grimm fairy tale!
Hansel and Gretel hits theatres January 11.
