Swedish and African singer/songwriter/producer Mohombi is already a European platinum-selling artist and is making his way Stateside, releasing his debut album in 2012. He has a bunch of high energy YouTube videos you can get familiar with, including the recent single “In Your Head” where he samples The Cranberries but lyrically replaces the "zombie" in your head with "Mohombi". Confident! Mohombi romancing the ladies seems to be a common theme in his catchy beats.
Choosing old songs and reworking them for relevance is a popular trend in current music, especially with pop and dance tracks. It works in this genre of music because a catchy beat will carry you all the way through a song. We’ve seen it recently with Jason Derulo’s “Don’t Wanna Go Home”, where he brought in elements of the Jamaican folk song “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” and Robyn’s “Show Me Love”. The Black Eyed Peas also did this, borrowing Dirty Dancing’s theme song “(I’ve had) The Time of My Life” and turning it into their hit “The Time (Dirty Bit)". These originals were popular songs on their own, so when they’re reworked or blended, they are instantly relatable. Mohombi’s version gives us a fresh listen to an old favorite's chorus.
Mohombi also recently did a song with Nelly entitled “Miss Me” and is currently working with producer RedOne, whom you may know in conjunction with the one and only Lady Gaga. Seems likely that we’ll be hearing a lot more from him very soon.
In the meantime, check out his Website, where you’ll be referred to as a “Mohomie” and get free music downloads, see video updates, and get the chance to chat online. You can also follow him on Twitter at @Mohombi.
