In an effort to both poke fun at Hollywood’s perceived unoriginality and simultaneously use it as a jump off point, writer/director/producer Marc Brener brings you the short film “Say it Ain’t Solo”. The premise is simple -- a father and son hit their tolerance limit when they find out the most recent Hollywood remake in the works is their beloved Star Wars. They find the idea disastrous and attempt to enlist friends in an effort to put a stop to the project.
The cast includes a slew of actors playing themselves, including the father-half of the main character team, veteran character actor Stephen Tobolowsky, and also Malin Akerman, Jason Alexander, Joe Mantegna, Kunal Nayyar, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Christopher "Doc Brown" Lloyd. Writer-director Brener also has a part as a studio executive. Josh Brener plays the Tobolowsky son, and it’s this character’s idea to utilize his father’s fame to get the attention they need to fuel their anti-remake cause.
Enjoy the punny title? There are other wordplays to be found, such as protestors carrying signs with messages like as “C-3P-NO!” Another fun moment in the trailer is when the son asks Malin Ackerman to make a statement on the rumor that she had been in talks to play Princess Lea. Her non-verbal reaction of surprise/delight/trying-not-to-react-too-largely is spot on.
The short is relatable, entertaining, and growing in popularity after winning Best Direction and Best of the Fest: Short Film at the L.A. Comedy Fest. Now, the trailer is up on Funny Or Die for your comedy enjoyment. Check it out!
