It should be no surprise he's a breakout Olympic star. He won a bunch of gold back in 2004 too. Combined with his record breaking eight golds this year, he has become the winningest Olympian in history. Pretty awesome. The last dude to hold the record for most gold metals in a single Olympics was Mark Spitz. That was like, hella long time ago - over thirty years! Paying homage to the greats before him, the young athlete strikes a pose for the latest Sports Illustrated by recreating the 1972 cover after Spitz's win way back when. Flossing one more gold medallion on his bare chest than his predecessor, the young buck takes his rightful place among our nation's all-stars. It's the circle of life. He's come a long way from his first swimming events at seven, which were in part to help him come with hyperactivity related to ADHD. He needed an outlet. He picked a good one! Now at only 23, Michael - The Baltimore Bullet - could speed through to the next games and set even more records. Being witness to history is emotional. I think that's why everyone is on the Phelps train right now. A feat like that comes along very rarely for an athlete. It's exciting, uplifting stuff that brings people together. That's the spirit of the games. Word.
