The lion is not only the king of the jungle, but he is also the almighty ruler of the box office. For two weeks, Madagascar 3 has slaughtered competitors such as Rock of Ages and the sci-fi thriller Prometheus.
In this last installment of the Madagascar series, Ben Stiller reprises his role of the lovable lion Alex, along with other talented voices such as Jada Pinkett-Smith, David Schwimmer, and Chris Rock. The PG-rated film, which follows the misfit group of animals through Europe, has something for everyone. For the kids, there are a multitude of bright colors, fun music, and the magic of the circus. The parents will enjoy the family-orientated film for the witty humor that occasionally pokes fun at the French.
While Madagascar 3 appeals to a wide audience, Prometheus and Rock of Ages are targeted to more specific groups.
Prometheus, which is rated R, is an intense and thrilling ride which is arguably a prequel to the 1979 film, Alien. With this rating and adult subject matter, the film is limited to certain group of people who wish to watch humans come in contact with their "makers" and ponder the origins of life.
Rock of Ages, on the other hand, is rated PG-13, and is a rock musical with a very talented all-star cast. This movie is blast back into the glory days of the 1980s and, most importantly, rock 'n' roll. The film also stars a mostly shirtless Tom Cruise, which doesn’t hurt either. This film targets those who are familiar with the music featured in the movie, which, unfortunately, is not everyone.
It will be interesting to see if Madagascar 3 tops the box office for the third week in a row, but with Disney-Pixar's Brave opening tomorrow, as well as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, it seems likely that this jungle adventure's reign might be coming to an end.
