Up until now, the trailers for the upcoming epic adaptation of Claude-Michel Schönberg’s musical Les Misérables have featuring really only one voice – Anne Hathaway’s. And while that was certainly plenty to whet our appetites (and wet our eyes), we’ve been DYING to hear some samples of the other A-List stars giving their pipes a workout!
Thanks to the brand new international trailer (don’t you just love international trailers?), we finally get a little taste of the vocal contributions of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, and more!
It’s not so easy to tell from the trailer, but it seems as if the scope of this film is really going to effectively utilize the medium of film to its full potential in bringing this musical to the big screen. I remember being so utterly disappointed in the 2004 adaptation of Phantom of the Opera because it felt like I was still watching the play. Director Joel Schumacher did not, in my opinion, take full advantage of all the cinematic possibilities available to him, and drab results ensued. At this point, that doesn’t seem like Les Mis will suffer the same fate in Oscar-winner Tom Hooper’s hands. And because all the singing was done live on set rather than played back on a track, it won’t have that overly slick, produced sound and will instead lend itself to greater realism… well, as realistic as breaking into song while a revolution is happening can be.
Long story short, I’m in. Check out the new trailer below.
