Look out, Nucky Thompson, you’ve got some female competition!
With Showtime nearing the end of two of their biggest female-centric series, “Weeds” and “The Big C”, there will be a gaping hole left for another no-nonsense, strong woman to take her place on the premium network’s primetime line-up… Enter Angie.
Not to be confused with Big Ang, the terrifying mob wife from the equally terrifying VH1 reality show. No, this Angie’s got her own game going on, as the head of a family crime syndicate. Basically, a female Tony Soprano. The series, called “Angie’s Body”, is currently in development with Showtime and it will reportedly be produced and directed by Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster. A shrewd choice to be sure, based on talent and clout alone (she’s proven herself to be a capable producer/director on several film projects), but one wonders what scope she’ll bring to a show about the mob. I mean, no matter what the outcome, it’s sure to be way better than the aforementioned “Mob Wives”, which, by its very nature, shirks the #1 rule of the mafia – YOU DON’T TALK ABOUT THE FAMILY BUSINESS!!! As a Sicilian myself, this show mortifies me probably even moreso than "Jersey Shore". But whatever, I digress…
Joining Foster’s team is Rob Fresco (nice Italian name… getting warmer!), who has an impressive resume, which includes writing and exec producing episodes of “Crossing Jordan”, “Heroes”, and “Touch”. He will be fulfilling the same duties for this show, along with “Community” EP Russ Krasnoff. An interesting conglomerate… It’s always hit or miss when you have a man attempting to write strong female characters, especially over the course of an entire television series; either they come off too abrasive and masculine, or their version of “strong” translates to “promiscuous” and “loud”. It’s hard to find that happy medium, but, hopefully, with Foster’s guiding hand in place, Angie will be a lady we can all fear and love at the same time!
