It is time for true talent to be rewarded. Recently, accolades have been handed out and praise fed on a silver spoon to undeserving individuals. Standards have changed the entertainment industry leaving us with mediocre talent. Talent is scouted amongst siblings of stars, athletes with universal appeal, and models of i.e. Maxim magazine. America has accepted these distorted perceptions of the metamorphosed artist, allowing them to conquer the entertainment industry. Passion and determination to gain success is overrated and underdogs have a slim chance of acceptance. Breakthroughs are scarce but talent is immense. It is not until talent slaps America in the face, that we begin to take notice of something new and real. The time is now and America just got dropped-kicked. A dynamic voice with unyielding drive has taken the nation by storm. Thank you, Jennifer Hudson. At the age of seven, Jennifer's talent was discovered in church. Jennifer was an angel sent from heaven with a voice that had the ability to shatter stained glass windows. Her soulful voice was massaged by the organs and strengthened by the gospel melodies. Jennifer's six range octave was heard throughout her community, but she wanted the world as her stage. She took on musical productions, local talent shows and eventually landed a role on a Disney cruise ship. The journey for Jennifer's voice to be heard began to unfold. Performing as Calliope, in the musical Hercules became a regular routine, but Jennifer still wanted more. Her higher aspirations convinced her to leave Disney and continue on her quest to become a major star. In 2004, Jennifer auditioned for the hit television show, American Idol. In her attempt to expose America to her magnanimous voice, she was shutout, not once but twice. First, Jennifer failed to please America and did not receive enough votes to make it to the final 12 contestants. Given a second chance by Randy Jackson, Jennifer was brought back as a wild card allowing her to stay in the competition. As with any second chance, results are not promised. Judge Simon Cowell lacked faith in Jennifer and America appeared to agree and did not vote in Jennifer's favor. As American Idol's door slammed in her, Jennifer saw one hundred new doors opening. Cowell's bitter criticism was seen as nothing more but a challenge to this rising star. Jennifer accepted the experience as a blessing in disguise. Although her introduction with America fell short of her expectation and her face became ancient history, quitting was never an option. Jennifer pressed on. Now it is 2006. Two years later, the 25 year old, from the south side of Chicago cannot keep her name out of the lights. Beating out 782 open call candidates and well established singers, Jennifer scored the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls. With no formal musical training or record deal, Jennifer was cast alongside such prominent names in the entertainment industry as Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, and Eddie Murphy. As a newcomer on the scene, questions were raised whether Jennifer was right for the part. Could she embody the prima donna role of Effie White? Could she hold her own? Can she sing like Jennifer Holiday? Critics lacked faith. On December 15, all doubts evaporated and Jennifer proved to America that she was on top of her game. Her voice mesmerizes your emotions, her character captivates your soul and Effie White is brought to life. From gaining 20 pounds to studying Jennifer Holiday's performance on YouTube, Ms. Hudson's performance is the quintessence of the original. She was magnificent. Jennifer is the breakthrough artist of the New Year. The onetime eliminated American Idol contestant, who failed to be fully appreciated, is now monopolizing every talk show and magazine cover. We hear her now. We know her name. We acknowledge her presence. Jennifer started singing 17 years ago but her journey just officially started. Her talent and beauty has gotten her nominated for Golden Globe and an Academy Award. Her future is now paved with a record deal and other acting opportunities. Jennifer Hudson is a true Dreamgirl and America can't get enough. by Danielle Terrell
