Dream girl Jennifer Hudson has signed on to join the NBC musical drama “Smash”, cast as Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning Broadway star who will serve as a mentor to Ivy (Megan Hilty) and Karen (Katharine McPhee). The network, cast, and crew are all thrilled about having Hudson on the show and are currently preparing for a number of changes slated to take place when “Smash” returns mid-season.
Hudson, who, in addition to being an Oscar-winner is also an “American Idol” alumni and a Grammy and Golden Globe winner, will be joined by Tony-nominated actor Jeremy Jordan, who will play a Brooklyn-born singer that is, unfortunately, extremely self-destructive. However, as the two new stars prepare to make a splash on “Smash”, a number of actors are leaving the show. Jaime Cepero (Ellis), Raza Jeffrey (Dev), and Brian D’Arcy (Frank) will be taking their final bow at the start of the next season, with D’Arcy wrapping up his storyline with Julia (Debra Messing).
The show also brought on a new showrunner: “Gossip Girl”'s Josh Safran. “Smash”'s previous showrunner, Theresa Rebeck, stepped down in March, and Safran came aboard in April. It will be interesting to see what Safran brings to show, as “Gossip Girl” is certainly a different type of soap from “Smash”.
Sadly, I do not think we will get to see Jennifer Hudson perform any Bollywood numbers as Dev is leaving the show. However, I can’t wait to see if she’ll belt out “And I’m Not Going” once more!
Are you excited to see Jennifer Hudson on “Smash”?
