ICYMI: HBO Officially Greenlights "Watchmen" Series!

It feels like it’s been a many years since we heard that “Lost” creator Damon Lindelof would be making an HBO television series adaptation of AlanMoore’s landmark graphic novel Watchmen. We’ve gone through cast announcements and how a pilot was happening, but that never guarantees it’s getting put to series. It is now official that HBO will go forward with “Watchmen” as a full-fledged TV series!

There is no release date info at this time, nor exactly how the plot will go, as Lindelof and others involved have said it won’t directly follow the source material beat for beat and will feature new and different superheroes. Considering that this is poised to be a series with many seasons, and the graphic novel Watchmen itself is a straightforward mini-series with a beginning, middle, and end, it’s probably a great call to do this. Lindelof has always expressed his fandom for the graphic novel and has said that it even influenced elements of “Lost”, so he’s a total nerd for it.

Also, that the Watchmen world itself had such a rich history of vigilante superheroes running around and fighting criminals that we only heard about but never really saw much of. Superheroes are so prevalent here that comics in this universe are about pirates and not superheroes… there is a lot of meat left on the bone of this world that can be explored more. Watchmen the graphic novel showed us primarily the end of the whole superhero thing for this universe, so seeing the beginning or its heyday will be something new that I entirely welcome. Expect to not see “Watchmen”, however, until sometime next year.
