In a fashion that only MTV can truly pull off, the 2012 Movie Awards recognized the best of the best in terms of this year’s films, and the many actors and actresses that starred in them. It was surely one spectacular night of delightfully poignant acceptance speeches, rocking musical performances, and highlights from the films that had us all clamoring inside of cinemas this entire past year.
All the stars were out last night at Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles to see who would take home the coveted golden popcorn award for Best Movie.
Host Russell Brand kicked things off, with a monolgue that poked fun at Michael Fassbender, Charlie Sheen, and even himself.
Fun. performed their smash hit “We Are Young”, while the gorgeously well-dressed Emma Watson accepted the award for Best Cast for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Another Emma, Emma Stone, accepted the newly-added Trailblazer award for her breakout roles in films like Easy A, Crazy Stupid Love, and The Help, as well as her involvement in soon-to-be released The Amazing Spider-Man. Her award was paired with a video of other stars and former colleagues such as Anna Farris, Octavia Spencer, and Steve Carell, paying, um, tribute(?) Ms. Stone. Spider-Man co-star and main squeeze Andrew Garfield even cheered her on as she made her speech, which was complete with tears of joy.

Stone wasn’t the only one tearing up, though; Christian Bale -- along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman -- presented an exclusive sneak peek of the highly-anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, complete with some footage of the late Heath Ledger, which turned out to be an emotional experience for star Bale (and for the rest of us as well!).
Serious man-candy Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and half-naked fireman Joe Manganiello made Elizabeth Banks the happiest woman on the planet as they presented her with the Best On-Screen Transformation award for her role in The Hunger Games.
Johnny Depp accepted the Generation Award; and as if that wasn’t cool enough as it is, before doing the usual acceptance speech, Depp performed side-by-side with The Black Keys to their hit “Gold on the Ceiling”. People everywhere, and of all ages, were fangirling as Depp rocked out flawlessly with the popular indie-rock group.
For some extra comic relief, Kristen Stewart playfully made out with herself while accepting the popcorn award for Best Kiss, since her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson was, unfortunately, not present to give her a replication of the smooch that won them the award in the first place.
The big winners of the night were the cast of The Hunger Games. All in all, various members of the cast (Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Alexander Ludwig) brought in 4 golden popcorn awards for the blockbuster series. Other recognition went to Jennifer Aniston for her role in Horrible Bosses, and Shailene Woodley took home the award for Best Breakthrough Performance for The Descendants. But the final fan-voted award for movie of the year, though, went to – not surprisingly – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, after a tremendous blockbuster success in theaters late last year.
We can’t wait for all the movies that are coming out this year, and we can’t wait to see who will be honored at next year’s MTV Movie Awards!
What were some of you favorite flicks that were honored this year?
