How To Go Hollywood Blonde

They say blondes have more fun. With dark-tressed celebs like Kim Kardashian taking the plunge, can you make the leap to light-headed?

First, be aware of your skin tone, which determines what color is right on you. There are many different shades of blondes, including ash blondes, golden blondes, platinum blondes, warm blondes, strawberry blondes, the list goes on, says Andrea Rothstein. Not only is she one of the few stylists I trust with my hair, this 17-year vet has also done red carpet locks for celeb clients -- like Carrie Preston of True Blood. Girlfriend knows her business and is trained specially in color.

There are also many different techniques to go blonde, she adds. If you desire a more natural look, then highlights are probably the best way to go. Highlights require less upkeep (every 6-12 weeks) whereas all over blonde you have to maintain every 2-5 weeks.

Before diving head-in, check your head! Determine the condition of your hair, Andrea advises. Make sure your hair is healthy and strong. Do not lighten or bleach damaged/weak hair, it WILL break off!

If you're hair is a little stressed, Deep condition it a couple of times beforehand or even use a leave in conditioner daily for a couple of weeks to help repair any damage you may have, before heading to the salon.

And do go to a salon. The most important thing to do when going blonde is see a professional, Andrea says. Please do not try this at home! There is a 99% chance that your hair will not come out looking like the box, she warns. People that work in beauty supply stores are not professionally trained or educated in hair color.

Referrals are always a great way to find a good stylist, she says. If you have a friend who is a knockout blonde, ask her where she gets it done.

Lastly, take care of that new 'do: After becoming a beautiful blonde, condition, condition, condition! Andrea enthuses. To freshen and brighten your blonde locks, you can use a Violet shampoo once or twice a week. Ask your hair colorist for a recommendation on which products are right for you.
