Celebrity stylist Jason Backe, co-owner of Ted Gibson Salon, gave me some great tips to handle those little emergencies in-between salon visits. Plus, he reveals the biggest mistake people make when coloring their hair at home:
There’s a secret weapon against those (premature) grays - and roots too. And yes, people in their teens and twenties get gray hairs. It’s natural, we all do, but we don’t all let it show! Jason happily touts Touch Back, that now not-so secret weapon I previously mentioned. This stuff is like a little magic marker that applies directly to the offending hair. Works great on roots too!
Guys, especially, don't want to look made-up by coloring their hair. For a natural look, “Touch Back will work great!” Jason tells me. “If you have more gray all over your head, try a demi-permanent color and process for only half the recommended time.” When dealing with home color, he says to keep it close to natural; “The biggest rule to stick to when coloring your hair at home is to only go two shades lighter or two shades darker than your starting color; the more closely you follow this rule, the more predictable your results.” Jason says: “The biggest mistake people make when coloring their hair at home is that they don’t take the time to really read the manufacturer’s instructions.” “The science and art of applying hair color, especially at home, has to be taken very seriously,” he adds. “The manufacturer has done literally thousands of tests to know exactly the best way to apply and process their individual products. If you read the directions - all of them - you will have more consistent, more natural looking and more enviable hair color. Who doesn’t want that?”
