Ladies and gentlemen… We have a poster! And a release date!
Ever since it was officially announced that the biopic Hitchcock was a go, I’ve been dutifully providing you with updates, and I shan’t wane in my steadfastness now! If it seems like the journey from greenlight to release date was super quick, you’d be right – it was only back in December that Fox Searchlight announced that they had rescued the adaptation of Stephen Rebello’s book, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of ‘Psycho’, from development limbo, and now, less than a year later, the film has been cast, shot, edited, in the can, and ready for a November 23 release date! Whew!
Director Sacha Gervasi’s ability to work super fast aside, what really has peeps buzzing is the convenient scheduling of the release of this film right smack-dab in the middle of the Awards Race! Someone over at Fox Searchlight must think it’s a good contender, no? Well, with a cast that includes two knighted actors, SIR Anthony Hopkins and DAME Helen Mirren – who also happen to both be Oscar winners too – it’s any wonder why the powers-that-be feel over-confident. Besides, biopics are notorious Oscar bait, as I’ve pointed out before.
The first poster from the film has also been released, and it’s delightfully, well, Hitchcockian! As the title no longer makes reference to Psycho, neither does this poster, save for the butcher knife… But, honestly, that could refer to any number of Hitchcock projects. Is the marketing team, for whatever reason, trying to play down the Psycho aspects of this film? Are they trying to avoid competition, or perhaps market saturation, with the upcoming “Bates Motel” series on A&E and/or HBO's own Hitchcock biopic "The Girl"?
So, now that we have a release date (six days before my birthday, btw) and a poster, that can only mean that a first trailer is very imminent! Stay tuned!
(P.S. - The link at the bottom of the poster just goes to the Fox Searchlight home page, so don't get too excited just yet...)
