The Goo Goo Dolls have been a band longer than I have been alive, and to be going on for so long, it is pretty impressive to continue seeing and hearing the unique and cohesive sound of John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin carry on over the years.
After being approached to write a song for the 1998 film, City of Angels, the Goo Goo Dolls skyrocketed to mainstream celebrity with their hit song “Iris.” These guys have succeeded considerably in singing about their personal lives as well as tackling social issues, so it only makes sense that their newest single, “Notbroken”, in some way encompasses both.
The song was inspired by a woman who sent a letter about her husband who was stationed in Iraq and became paralyzed due to battle. With her husband uncomfortable with returning home as his insecurities keep him in the hospital, all she wanted him to know was that he is still all she ever wanted. Rzeznik says, “It just kind of came out. It's kind of like I was writing a love letter to him on her behalf." The music video re-enacts the author’s story, played out by silhouettes against a background of fluctuating colors. The subtlety of the changing colors which coincide with the story through the lyrics evokes interesting emotions, which we can assume parallels with the way different colors make you feel naturally. The song’s chorus states, “Time wont ever steal my soul / And we’re not broken, so please come home,” which only has you rooting for the couple to reunite and continue to hold onto the love they once shared.
