'Godzilla' Getting a Highbrow Update

Written by Katie Marzullo. Published: December 10 2013

Let’s face it, Godzilla can be a bit… cheesy.

But now it looks like the legendary monster is getting a more serious facelift, thanks to yet another big screen reboot! Scripted by “The Walking Dead” creator, Frank Darabont, the new movie boasts an impressive cast that includes Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Aaron Taylor Johnson, as well as British Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins and The Odd Life of Timothy Green star CJ Adams – if those folks can’t give Godzilla some legitimacy, I dunno what could!

And judging by the trailer, the film looks genuinely intense! Director Gareth Edwards is clearly going for a gritty, more dramatic approach than the Godzilla films of yore, like Roland Emmerich’s 1998 campfest starring Matthew Broderick and Hank Azaria. The monster itself – which is mostly obscured by darkness and fog in the trailer – even seems scarier. No rubber suits or dodgy CGI here!

Check out the trailer for yourself below and let us know your thoughts!

Godzilla is slated for a May 16, 2014 release.
