Friday Five: 5 of the Biggest Box Office Bombs of All Time

Here are 5 of the biggest BOB’s of all time...

Gigli

Cost: $74,000,000

Lost: $77,961,644

When Jenny From The Block was coupled up with Ben Affleck, “Bennifer” was splashed all over the tabs and entertainment news. Why not put them in a movie? The answer to why not is called Gigli. People were not into it. After only making $4 million opening weekend, then seeing an 80% decline in ticket sales, it was taken out of theaters. The three-week run is one of the shortest in Hollywood history.

The Postman

Cost: $80,000,000

Lost: $83,346,947

Remember Kevin Costner, you guys? He was really badass; then he started making movies that nobody saw. He’s probably still pretty cool, but his movie choices don’t seem to deliver.

Speed Racer

Cost: $200,000,000

Lost: $106,054,234

This movie just never really hit the gas pedal, so to speak. It’s all full of puns up in here. The Japanese cartoon is a classic for sure, but also quirky and, well, Japanese. Some things just can’t be replicated even by the most sincere fans.

The Adventures of Pluto Nash

Cost: $120,000,000

Lost: $134,396,524

We can all agree that Eddie Murphy, when he hits his comedic stride, is pretty genius. The powers that put this movie together were apparently not. The studio actually stopped it from release, yet somehow two years later it escaped the video vault where it was being held and was unleashed upon the world. The result was not pretty.

Cutthroat Island

Cost: $115,000,000

Lost: $146,947,958

A high-seas pirate adventure, with a twist -- the sword slinger is a girl! Some movies are so over-the-top they’re just awful good fun. Cutthroat Island is notable as one of those films, and also because it is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records -- as the biggest financial disaster in all of movie history.
