For Your Consideration: Austin Mahone, a Legitimate Bieber Alternative

Watch out, Justin Bieber, YouTube singing sensation Austin Mahone is on your tail. The 16-year-old started out posting his homemade covers of pop songs online in 2010 and quickly built a following. Who doesn’t love kids on guitars?! One of Austin’s said covers was of Bieber’s own “Mistletoe”, which actually got more views than the original. That’s right -- more hits than Bieber!

The similarities between the two boys are more than their appealing vocal presence, however; Austin is another sweet-faced, shaggy-haired heartthrob that plays multiple instruments and has big goals. He seems to have the support too -- a fan base of teen girls has brought Austin’s YouTube subscriptions to over 350,000 and his Twitter count to over half a mil. You can refer to them by their proper name, “Mahomies”. Strange to think that a younger newbie could march in and share the spotlight with Bieber, but perhaps Justin would gladly relinquish some of that fan base wealth. Or maybe they should do a song together and really test out YouTube’s viewing capacities... or do a surprise show! I envision fan fainting spells reminiscent of a Beatles concert.

Austin’s first single was recently released on iTunes, entitled “11:11”. No surprise that the upbeat pop song is love-themed: “It’s 11:11, make a wish and make a wish and say / I hope you come true.” I have a feeling he’ll get the girl.

Thanks to a fan vote contest on Facebook, Austin will be performing a show at the Best Buy Theater in New York on June 22. And what do you know… we have his announcement video for you! Watch it below.

Tickets for the show go on sale tomorrow (May 12) at 12:00, and the first 400 hundred people to buy will get a meet-and-greet with Austin himself. Get your cameras ready!
