Oh, surprise! The Bachelor-ish reality show Farmer Wants a Wife is pulling close to the same ratings as critical darling Gossip Girl. P.S. " I'm not really surprised.The task is simple, and it's all in the name.Matt's a 29-year-old farmer in Missouri who loves anything outdoorsù and has a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in agricultural technology. What, you thought farming was all that simple? Poor city mouse!There is an odd, down home charm about this show that reminds me of my youth. My mother's side had farmland and we lived in a fairly small town throughout my teenage years. There were a lot of cornfields.My great-grandparents and grandparents owned houses next to each other, much like Matt lives next to his father on land their family has tended since the 40's.He's the real deal in that regard; Matt and his father, Melvin, grow corn, soybeans and wheat on about 200 acres. That's fairly massive for all you city folk. Something like 10 football fields put together.It's all rather quaint and still yet otherworldly at the same time, certainly entertaining for someone who had never stepped foot on a real farm. I can see why so many people connect with the show.There is of course also the element of romance. It's all in the name, right? Right!Matt, clearly prepped for reality TV, is still true to himself and his personality shines through. He is polite and unpretentious, though the city girls vying for his attention sometimes mistake this for naivet.
