Pete Wentz asks: Got a dollar? Before I reveal why he needs your Washington, here's an observation that provides a little story and personal realization that will hopefully make you give a crap about Pete's new cause:
I'm not all Mr. World Traveler, but I've been around (in more ways than one, hey-oh!). When I was in Central America the most shocking discovery was the faucet only had ONE knob. No hot water, just "on" or "off." It was exceedingly cold and I found myself washing up by standing outside the stream and using my hands to slash water on myself like a small woodland creature.
But you know what? I dealt with it. As the old saying goes; when in "¦Costa Rica or whatever, right? Except here's the thing: Nearly 900 million people do not have access to clean water AT ALL.
Given the option between cold water and no water, I'd take frozen nipples every time.
Pete and the UNICEF Tap Project are working to raise money during World Water Week 2010 (March 21-27) and they're asking people to donate $1 for tap water at participating restaurants to provide clean water to children around the world.
"It's truly an honor to be the national spokesperson for the Tap Project and support efforts to provide clean water to children in the developing world," Pete says. "Water is something that we as Americans often take for granted but the reality is, the lack of clean and accessible drinking water kills 4,100 children under the age of five every day and as a new father I have become highly attuned to the needs of children everywhere. Unfortunately, it's usually when emergencies like Haiti occur, that the importance of clean water really becomes apparent to the rest of us."
