Given that this is a day and age where a majority of the information we receive comes via the internet, the unique story of Colbie Caillat and the recognition she received via MySpace is truly worthy of telling. Colbie may be a relative newcomer to the music scene but this 22 year old, Malibu native is no stranger to the business. Her father, Ken Caillat, co-produced the successful Fleetwood Mac albums, Rumours and Tusk, allowing her exposure to two of the most talented musicians in the business, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie.She began to take singing seriously at the tender age of 11, when she first heard the voice of Lauryn Hill. Her father advised her that if she wants respect in the business she should become a songwriter. She started to learn the acoustic guitar at 19 and soon began writing songs. She began to collaborate with Mikal Blue and Jason Reeves, and together the threesome created the songs that would appear on her album Coco, a title she chose from a nickname she received in her childhood. With her new ability to play guitar and collection of songs secured, it was time to put them out for the public to hear. She created a MySpace account and downloaded her music for all to hear. She was met with moderate recognition but it was not until she wrote the song Bubbly that her talent really became known. Once she put the song up on the site, she was surprised to discover that she was receiving thousands of hits a day. Ultimately she became the number one unsigned artist on MySpace for four straight months. She received ten million plays thanks to Bubbly, and record labels took notice. Universal Republic was the lucky label that signed her. Colbie chose them because they allowed her creative freedom, and she credits MySpace, saying that the site allows you to build an army of fans and then when you go to a record company there's no point in them trying to change what you do because it's already been tried and tested.Colbie's story has really only just begun. Her album was recently certified gold and with upbeat songs like Oxygen and Little Things, we are sure that Bubbly will not be her only successful single. Colbie will start her fall tour this month and is scheduled to appear in Irvine, California at the Girlfrenzy concert, an all day event featuring some of the top female musicians in music, including Avril Lavigne, Sheryl Crow, and Fiona Apple. With Colbie's immense singing/songwriting talent and determination to succeed in the music business, she is sure to go far. Her story is already one for the record books.
