Many people may get their fifteen minutes of fame, but it is ultimately how you work to extend that time that really counts. MySpace and YouTube phenomenon, Chris Crocker, is a prime example of making the most of the doors that open when you do receive attention. This 19 year old, openly gay actor has been working on his craft as a performance artist for several years, but you can say that in some way it was Britney Spears who got his name to be on everyone's lips. Prior to his now infamous Britney piece, Chris produced more than sixty videos, and had developed what can best be termed as a cult following on MySpace and YouTube. In the Spring of 2007 his profile was featured in The Stranger, an alternative weekly in Seattle. In September 2007 he posted the first part of his video, Leave Britney Alone Part 1, on his MySpace page. In the video he talked about how he was worried for Britney and wanted her to get healthy. The video prompted so many hits on his page that he soon posted the now notorious Leave Britney Alone Part 2 video on both his MySpace page and YouTube. The video was a scathing attack on people who have been trying to undermine Britney Spears in the media. He made an emotional plea to leave her alone and let her live her life. Word of mouth spread quickly and soon the video had over 11 million views and has become one of the most discussed videos of all time on YouTube. The video's notoriety garnered massive media attention for Chris and led to interviews on CNN, The Today Show, MSNBC and Jimmy Kimmel Live, among many others. Inevitably, backlash soon followed. Several parodies were created around the video and notable news and media outlets like CNN and Fox News claimed that, like most of Chris' videos, the video was a performance piece. Chris has emphatically stated all over the media that the content in his Britney videos is 100% genuine. He was also recently sued for breach of contract by Onch Movement Jewelry, who claimed he signed a contract as a celebrity spokesperson but reneged on his deal. However, Chris did make an appearance at a local nightclub in Los Angeles and appeared at the Just Britney art show wearing pieces from the jewelry line. These minor setbacks have not stopped Chris from moving forward with his career goals though. It was recently reported in the trades that he signed a development deal with 44 Blue Productions to create a reality show based on his life, entitled Chris Crocker's 15 Minutes More. Prior to his newfound fame, Chris had received interest from MTV about creating videos for its website, an offer he is revisiting. He is also looking to branch out in his acting career and working on ideas with a Los Angeles producer as well as the LOGO channel, which focuses on gay-themed projects.
