A slew of celebs; Audrina Patridge, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Halle Barry, even Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey have all commented on their at-home beauty treatments.
Hilary Duff and Jessica Alba both see the same facialist, who suggests livening up dull skin with a refrigerated spray bottle of mint tea.
Catherine Zeta-Jones is said to brush her teeth with mashed-up strawberries which she mixes with baking soda. The berries contain an acid that works as a mild astringent.
Some homespun beauty remedies are questionable, like treating hair to a mayo conditioning mask. Slopping mayonnaise on your head may give it a little shine from the oils, but it’s not a good conditioner.
Beauty expert Elizabeth TenHouten is here for the do-it-yourself {DIY} at-home beauty enthusiast. Her upcoming book is filled with at-home tips/ tricks and recipes for all natural beauty remedies {scrubs, masks, moisturizers, etc.} to achieve A-Lister skin naturally!
She also recommends a mist, this one using apple cider. “Add an even ratio 50:50 of Apple Cider Vinegar with purified water,” she says. Fill-up a mister/spray bottle and mist your face after your typical cleansing routine. It will act as a topical astringent.”
Her favorite home-crafted face lotion is her green tea lotion, the ingredients for which can be found at any local health food store:
Green tea extract, which is known to suppress inflammation Peppermint oil also known to stimulate cell generation
Mix the ingredients together until it becomes creamy.
“Apply green tea cream to your face, avoiding the eye-area and enjoy the healing benefits of your natural beauty ‘recipe,”” Elizabeth advises.
One of my personal faves is even less work; pure honey. She agrees it’s a great facial. “Organic honeycomb can be found at your local farmer's market,” she suggests. “It is Mother Nature's moisturizer. It also has medical, healing qualities for your throat, if ingested, as it is an anti-inflammatory substance. Thank you buzzzy bees!”
And thank you, Elizabeth! She left me with another recipe, something to use the rest of that apple cider we didn’t use in the face mist bottle:
Mix together ¼ cup of low sodium tomato paste, a teaspoon of olive oil, and Apple Cider Vinegar until you have a smooth paste. “Use as a neck and facial mask to alleviate acne,” she recommends. Leave on for 15 minutes, rinse of gently with warm water and then splash with cold water to close your pores.
